Why Become a Driving Instructor?

Driving instructors are in high demand across the UK, with learner waiting lists growing in many areas. This makes it an excellent time to enter the industry. Once qualified, you can enjoy steady work, flexible hours, and the freedom of being your own boss.

It is also a genuinely rewarding role. Every lesson contributes to someone’s independence, confidence and safety on the road. For many instructors, seeing pupils pass their test and move on to new opportunities is one of the most satisfying parts of the job.

GREEN BADGE ADI TRAINING

Green Badge vs Pink Badge

When training to become a driving instructor, you’ll earn two official licences issued by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency: the pink badge and the green badge.

You receive your pink badge after passing Part 1 (theory & hazard perception) and Part 2 (advanced driving test). This allows you to teach as a trainee (PDI) while preparing for your final exam. The pink badge is valid for six months and can only be issued once.

After passing Part 3 (instructional ability), you’re awarded your green badge, making you a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI).

In simple terms: pink badge first, green badge last. The green badge is the end goal and marks you as fully qualified.
